Charity. What do you think of it?

So it's almost Christmas. The shopping centers, schools and squares are all decorated for Christmas celebration. We know many people are getting desperate thinking about what gifts to buy, how to buy more and spend less, where to travel, how to decorate their houses and all kinds of "preparation".
Besides doing all that, many people start looking for places to give things or money as charity or organize charity or foun-raising events this time of the year. That made me curious about what you think of Christmas and charity. I'm not saying one depends on the other, it's just that charity is very common during Christmas time and that called my attention (and aroused my curiosity). ;)
I found this video where a girl asks people if they give to charity. According to her, maybe giving to charity has become a trend. What do you think?

Do you give to charity? What do you give?

  2. I think that the people do it because is a custom and almost all the people do too, not because is the correct thing, give a little of that they have. If they were worried about the other would do this in any day of year, not just in the Christmas.

  3. Christmas is a magical time for me. I don’t know why, but I think people are more sensitive this time of year. It’s a time to apologize, to laugh at jokes that “annoying uncle”, to unite more those to surrounds us. The fact is that we practice more charity this time of year (perhaps because we are surrounded by this magic!).But is important to remember that charity is not restricted do giving alms. Being charitable is to have within yourself the feelings of cooperation and brotherhood (at any time of year!). Certainly, if more people were touched by the true sense of charity, we would live the magic of Christmas all year long.

  4. Hello People!

Removing the religious nature, Christmas is a reflexion’s moment of how was the year that passed, the people make party, buy gifts and things and promove meetings. Besides, the people think about the social differences that plague the world and make charity for the others people that don’t have conditions of close the year with dignity. Then, the people promove donations of toys, food and clothing. I particularly participate of a party organized for my father in the Island Bom Jesus dos Passos, where he live. He wear the Santa Claus’ clothes and get out for the island’s streets with a red bag full of toys walking or on top of a car. Pass for all the street and back for the his hotel. There, he give hot dog with soda and for end give the toys. More ou less 100 children participate. I participe helping in all work.

After all that, the christmas is of family. We make our party particular. Always is so every year. Merry Christmas for all.

Charity is a big issue when you're talking about Brazil. I say that because I know some people who ask for money to buy a box to sell ice-cream... And has asked that for 4 years! What an expensive box!!!!!!

So... I think we shouldn't give money most of the times. If the poor people really wants to be helped, they'll take many other things, like food and clothes (and still be thankful!).

Just to close: I don't think christmas charity is for real... It's just a fake act. Who wants to help, helps whatever the date.

  6. Every year during this period that precedes the celebration of Christmas, people are more sensitive. Looks like a magic and involving everyone.

Charity, or to share with those who need it should always be done. Not just this period.

Our reading book this semester, "A Christmas Carol..." is a great lesson in life.

  7. I think Christmas is a date that arouse a charity feel , but this should happen in the whole year. We need to be aware of help the people in any situation. Normally I give to charity when somebody ask me something. I help with some money or some food. But every year I collect the clothes that I don’t wear more to donate. I know that I'll can do more to help. But we forgot to give charity because the hectic life that we live.

  8. I help where children need, like going to the orphanage, play with them, bring gifts, charity is done throughout the year.
Christmas is a time more familiar, where people are more sensitive and do more charity, but I think it should be done throughout the year.
The world is in need of charity!

  9. I think that the charity in Christmas time is good even if seems like a "one good act for year", because some of the people do this can turn to do charity's acts more times in the others days of the year.
And for the people that need to help, it is good because a big part of them have nothing to celebrate and any help is welcome.

  10. I think it´s sad when people only summarize the Christmas as the date of charity. But of course that many people do because of the date´s meaning. So people relate with having compassion and other feelings like this.
But I will not be crazy or angry enough to say it´s bad that people do charities on Christmas because it´s people being helped, and that´s what really matters. My family does in lot of dates but especially at Christmas. I´m saying it because we helped children in a system that it´s like an adoption, but you can´t stay with the child. So they have to come back to home and you can only spend the day with them.
At Christmas we will present them and give small baskets to their families. We can only do with two little boys, but if everyone could to do too, it would be great!

  11. I give to charity and usually I give clothes and books I don't need anymore. I think most of people do it,right? What I really think is hard is to give some of your TIME. It is the hardest think and, most of times, the best.
I was very impressed with the number of students who told me Christmas was a sad day. Imagine how it feels for those who have no family, no food, or even worse: no shelter? We can't solve all these problems but giving our time and attention to people may be more significant for them... Listening to a story, asking people how they feel and actually LISTENING to the aswer might change one's day. It isn't easy because we're always in a hurry but we can try to do it once in a while. And we can start with the ones that are close (family, friends, neighbors...).
I'll try to do it more often. Let's see what happens...

  12. PS: Don't forget to watch the video! I really hope you're doing it. It is a great opportunity to practice your listening since the ones who are being interviewed are not following any script.

  13. Charity for me is to help others without thinking about whether you will receive something in return.
The easiest way is to give things, but the charity is really taking their time to help with anything you can do.
At Christmas, the feeling of charity is touched by the meaning of the date: God gave his only son to teach man to live and love.

  14. I think a fantastic attitude to charity, and I agree with Professor Alan when she says that we should donate a little time to hear our stories, confidences and confessions, is something so simple that anyone can give and it will have an enormous repercussion the recipient.

  15. The charity is an very nice act, but it would be much nicer if it were ever made and not just during Christmas
Charity is not just donating clothes or toys. Giving love, affection, attention, bring a little happiness to those in need, this is true charity, and it can be done year-round

  16. I'm such a cold heart in this case, I don't care about Christimas, in fact I slept on 24 november. It is true, people care about each other during the Christimas periode, but it's not enough for me, it won't change anything. People will continue to get hurt for no reason. I'm starting to think that's the human nature.

    I'm a bit late, I think.
